Walter Piston was born in Rockland, Maine in 1894 and died in Belmont, Massachusetts in 1976. He composed his ballet The Incredible Flutist in 1938; it received its premiere by the Boston Pops Orchestra under the direction of Arthur Fiedler the same year.
